After the acquisition of a property suitable for the conversion of a school in 1997, the De Beer family developed the idea to fruition. In 2002, Vale Verde International School was founded following years of investment required to bring the buildings in line with Ministry of Education requirements.
Following the successful completion of a Masters Research Degree by the School Director investigating the effective implementation of bilingual education, a pilot scheme was launched in 2008 to introduce Portugal’s first fully-fledged bilingual primary school. This project provides for 50% of teaching in English and 50% of lessons being conducted in Portuguese. This pilot project has proven to be a great success and VVIS foundation students are now able to communicate in both languages. In order to cater for additional students, VVIS was awarded a license to build two new wings which include three extra classrooms, two new ablution blocks and a canteen/kitchen.
Due to demand, an International Preschool following the bilingual International Preschool Curriculum will commence in September 2013. For these year groups, emphasis will again be on bilingual teaching, with the ultimate goal of students being able to communicate in both Portuguese and English. Enrolments are now open for parents wishing to register their children for the 2013-14 academic year, starting at age three.
Other facilities include:
- All-weather sports field
- ICT Lab
- Food-tech lab
- Chemistry lab
The school adheres to carefully drafted aims, values and philosophies. The philosophical beliefs that make up the VVIS culture can be found on different sections of this website.
