All stake holders in a community have Duties, Responsibilities and Rights.
I would suggest that those mentioned below are among these Duties, Responsibilities and Rights for specific groups within our community.
School Authorities
Duties/Responsibilities – Do everything within their power to achieve the school’s Mission.
- Represent the school to National and International bodies.
- Uphold and promulgate the moral values espoused by the school.
- Ensure that all national regulations pertaining to education are known and adhered to.
- Communicate swiftly and clearly all necessary decisions and information to those other members of the community who might need it.
- Assist the Teaching Staff to carry out their duties as effectively as possible
- Publish an annual calendar of events.
- Publish a timetable of classes and subjects.
- Provide and facilitate appropriate channels of communication within the community.
- Behave in an appropriate and professional manner to all other members of the community.
Rights – Be treated with consideration and respect by all other members of the community.
- Be informed in good time of any relevant information pertaining to members of the community which affects the school.
Teaching Staff
Duties/Responsibilities – Deliver the curriculum to the pupils under their charge to the best of their ability.
- Uphold and promulgate the moral values espoused by the school.
- Keep up to date with developments in pedagogy, their subject, the preparation of lessons and the correcting and marking of pupil’s work.
- Uphold the good name of the school by action, word and deed.
- Periodically prepare, correct and mark evaluations in line with the school policies and calendar.
- At all times set a good example to the rest of the community.
- Set appropriate homework to comply with the published timetable.
- Energetically complete supervision duties as detailed on the published rota.
- Guide and advise pupils upon their learning to the best of their ability.
- Behave in an appropriate and professional manner to all other members of the community.
- Uphold and enforce the school code of conduct.
Rights – Be treated with consideration and respect by all other members of the community.
- Receive the agreed salary for their work regularly and in good time.
- Be informed of any changes within the school that might affect them.
- Receive necessary and appropriate In Service Training.
- Express their opinions on school matters relevant to them through the appropriate channels.
Pupils
Duties/Responsibilities – Participate actively and responsibly in the education they are being offered.
- Keep to agreed deadlines.
- Abide by all articles of the school code of conduct in both letter and spirit.
- Abide by the school dress code.
- Arrive at classes and other school events on time and with the correct and complete equipment necessary.
- Uphold the good name of the school to which they belong by word, action and deed.
- Make up any work missed through absence.
- Ensure that communication between home and school is fluid and efficient (i.e. taking letters home, handing in return slips or letters to the appropriate person, etc.)
Rights – Be treated with consideration and respect by all other members of the community.
- Have their work evaluated, corrected and returned in a timely manner.
- Receive their education in safe and pleasant surroundings.
- Receive guidance and advice upon their learning.
- Receive a balanced and well rounded education.
- Be challenged to achieve their full potential.
- Be corrected and if necessary punished for infringements of the school code of conduct.
- Be given an adequate period of time to make up work missed.
Parents
Duties/Responsibilities – Ensure that relevant school fees and costs are paid in full and in a timely manner.
- Uphold and promulgate the moral values espoused by the school.
- Advise the school of any change of circumstance that may affect the pupil.
- Ensure that their son/daughter does not miss school unnecessarily.
- Ensure that their son/daughter arrives at school correctly dressed, equipped and in a fit condition to participate fully in the learning experience provided.
- To attend consultations and interviews when requested to do so.
- Reply to communications sent by the school (return slips etc.)
- Be informed of and supervise their son/daughter’s study tasks at home and provide a suitable place and opportunity for such tasks to be undertaken with a proper seriousness.
- Take an intelligent and supportive interest in their son/daughter’s education and moral development.
Rights – Be treated with consideration and respect by all other members of the community.
- Receive timely and regular information on their son/daughter’s academic progress, social development, behaviour and attitude as observed within the school.
- Be informed as a matter of urgency of any worrying attitude or behaviour observed in their son/daughter.
- To be received by the school authorities in an appropriate time and in an appropriate manner to discuss and hopefully resolve any problems.
- To be a member of the Vale Verde International School Parent’s Association if they so wish by following the accepted membership procedure.
